Mazingira is Kiswahili for environment, both social and ecological surrounds. Mazingira Institute is a civil society organization established in Kenya in 1978. It is an active participant in the local and global social process.
The Economist (21st December 1991) selected Mazingira Institute for inclusion in the Guide of the world’s “Good Think Tanks”, where it was rated favourably compared to many prestigious institutions.
1999 UNCHS (Habitat) Scroll of Honour Award, for the promotion of secure land tenure and transparent land allocation, given to Operation Firimbi (Blow the Whistle) campaign against public land grabbing and corruption in Kenya.
